Well, its official, my video card completely stopped working today. Its now getting RMA'ed. Yai for warranties, apparently I get to exchange it for a 5870.

edit: For the curious, i'm now on my old computer which was collecting dust in the closet.

What card did you have before that allows you to RMA it for a 5870? That sounds like quite the upgrade, whatever it was.

The 4870 x2. I think it might be because they've probably dealt with a lot of problems with the 4870.

Oh, so it's not that big of a step up. Just the newer series of a similar card. But isn't it awesome when the warranty gives you an upgrade? I always feel like I'm somehow cheating when that shit happens.

Yeah its pretty sweet, the new card will support DX 11, which is a pretty huge step. Lucky for me the 4870 was discontinued.

Usually if you wait a year (sometimes two) whatever you bought, even non-graphics cards (but still computer-related) will get discontinued. At worst you'll get your shit repaired, but at best, upgrade!
My friend bought a 24" HD monitor for six hundred dollars when it came out. He got it at Best Buy and purchased the four-year protection plan. His monitor died JUST inside the four-year warranty, and now he's getting a 42" LCD TV as a replacement because Best Buy doesn't even carry CLOSE to what he had before.
